AHS150 Lecture Notes - Lecture 2: Cell Nucleus, Starch, Cytosine
Document Summary
Chemistry is the science of the structure and interactions of matter. Matter is anything that occupies space and has mass. Mass is the amount of matter in any living organism or non-living thing. Chemical elements are the building blocks of matter. Chemical symbols have one or more letters to represent the name of the element (e. g. h = There are 26 elements present in the human body. 4 of those elements make up 96% of the body"s mass. The 22 other elements are considered as lesser and trace elements, which are just as important to maintain homeostasis as major elements. The central part of an atom made up of protons and neutrons. Tiny, negatively charged particles that travel around the nucleus like a cloud, in no fixed path or orbit. Number of protons in a nucleus = atomic number. Each atom of a different element has a different number of protons in the nucleus.
