Mammary Gland Anatomy and Milk Synthesis
Milk secreting organ: one udder with four mammary glands
- Exocrine gland that secreted milk into duct system
- Provides easy access to milk for the newborn
- Suspended outside wall of rear abdomen
- No skeletal support or protection
There are four mammary glands or quarters
- each quarter operates independently
- all have their own streak canal
- rear quarters are more developed (produce 60% of milk)
Components of the mammary gland:
- there is a support system of ligaments and skin
- milk-secreting system with alveoli
- duct system
- blood supply and drainage system for nutrients and hormonal supply
The Mammary Glands support system
- strong support system is important
oprevents occurrence of pendulous udder
ominimize risk of injury
oavoid difficulties when milking
- 2 major groups of ligaments
omedian suspensory ligament: flexible ligament that changes size as the cow
grows
separates left from right quarters
provides primary support
attaches udder to abdominal wall
inter-mammary groove marks position of the median suspensory
ligament
elastic tissue that change size
damage or weakness of median suspensory ligament
pendulous udder
udder stretches downward
more difficult to milk
increases likelihood of injury to teats
genetic selection for strong median suspensory ligament is very effective
olateral suspensory ligaments
inflexible fibrous tissue
extends down the sides of the udder
provides support to interior of udder
weakness causes pendulous udder
- skin

Milk-secreting system with alveoli duct system blood supply and drainage system for nutrients and hormonal supply. The mammary glands support system strong support system is important: prevents occurrence of pendulous udder, minimize risk of injury, avoid difficulties when milking. 2 major groups of ligaments: median suspensory ligament: flexible ligament that changes size as the cow grows separates left from right quarters. Provides primary support attaches udder to abdominal wall inter-mammary groove marks position of the median suspensory ligament elastic tissue that change size. Damage or weakness of median suspensory ligament pendulous udder udder stretches downward.
