Adding ingredients to the TMR mixer:
-order of ingredients is important
-auger or reel mixers
ograins, protein supplements
osmall inclusion feeds (mineral-vitamin premixes, feed additives)
ochopped hay and ensiled forages
-vertical screw mixers
olong dry forage
ograins and protein supplements
osmall inclusion feeds
oensiled forages
struck capacity: the full capacity of the mixer when you fill it up to the top
this is not a good idea to fill it so full
- this is very heavy so there is inefficient mixing
-not uniformilaly mixed
- this can waste feed because could spill when mixing
Mixing capacity: filling the TMR mixer just above your mixing parts of the machine usually 70-80% of the
structure
-this minimizes spillage
- and have maximum mixing
over mixing can cause reduction in partical size
depending on ingredients the mixing should be 5-8 minutes
consistency is the key to feeding TMR

Document Summary

Changes in the chemical composition of feed ingredients that are included in the tmr: forage moisture content. Tmr ingredients weighed at mixing are on as-fed basis. Need to account for changed in ingredient moisture or dm content. Failure to account for changes in silage moisture content; Results in mixing errors as forage to concentrate ratio in tmr changes. If silage moisture content increases, underfeed dm, decreased milk production. If silage moisture content increases, underfeed dm leading to wasted feed. Adjust when dm content varies by >2% units. Collected 50-100g of a representative silage sample, place it in container or on plate. Dry the sample on full power setting of microwave. Weight a plastic container or paper plate ( tare the scale with its weight. Weigh sample after 4th drying and record weight. % dm = (final weight/initial weight) x 100. Dry sample for another 10 to 20 sec to constant weight.
