Cooley-Looking glass self, we develop a sense of ourselves through the reflection of other
people
Informal steps:
1. We imagine how we appear to other people (smart, funny, weight, height)
2. Imagine how they would respond to us
3. We process how people respond to us
4. Develop feelings about ourselves based on the reactions
We shape how we see ourselves based on interactions with primary caregivers
We become who we are told we are or who we are taught to be
Other people are directly implicated in the sense of self, membership we have in the group
Socialization process- skill set for the group we are a part of
Process by which we become members of the broader group
Members of the group develop sense of generalized other (we understand ours and everyone
else’s roles) Ex. When getting a driver’s license, we are responsible to know the rules of the
road before going for the test
3 stages of development:
1. Pre-play-capacity to imitate adults or other significant people in the social world around
us Ex. Waving bye or blowing kisses are not understood, only imitated because these
responses encourage behaviour.
2. Play stage proper- one role at a time. Ex. Playing house with a mom and child role
3. Game stage proper- team sports to play effectively you must know what everyone’s
roles are. Learning everyone’s roles is like learning of society as a whole. When we learn
roles, we see the generalized other.
Society looks like chaos if we don’t know what the rules are.
Where do we fit into the broader society? Gender/ race/class is the first to determine this.
68-74cents per dollar is the difference between men and women pay.
Which class we are born into-working/middle/upper determines some factors already.
