MBIO 2020 Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: Cell Envelope, Dna Replication, Cell Nucleus

80 views3 pages

Document Summary

Level of structure of nucleic acids: from chemistry to biological structures. Length - informational: number of base pairs (bps) Rna molecules are single stranded (ss) but contain some ds regions in the molecule: created when the molecules folds back on itself randomly, rna differs not only chemically but physically from dna. In some viruses, however, chromosomal rna is ds. In ds regions of rna a=u and g=c - forms a hairpin. The bacterial chromosome is a single circular molecule of dna, exceptions are rare - only 1 chromosome. Dna compacts to fit into cell: dna is organized into 50+ domains or loops, dna in loops is supercoiled/super twisted. Double helix - first level of twisting - additional twists are supertwists. Chromosomes are divided into functional units - genes: most - not all - genes contain information for making proteins - structural genes. Information is in the sequence of n-bases in genes.
