Response variable is the birth weight (the variable of interest) Cocaine exposure is the explanatory variable (exposed/unexposed: and explanatory variable explains or possibly causes changes in the response variable. This is a observation study and not a experiment because we are observing the research and not imposing any conditions. The response variable is survival time in months. Explanatory variable is diet (there are 6 levels of the diet variables) This is an experiment there researchers applied different conditions to the rats (conditions sometimes called treatments) If this randomization is done well we need not worry about lurking as any difference between the groups at the start of the experiment are due to chance. Two variables are confounded if its is impossible to separate their effects on the response. The explanatory variables = diet and exercise programs are confounded.
