Moral compass evokes clear images of mental procedures that help a person to
distinguish what is right from what is wrong (Young, 2013). Most of us possess a strong moral
compass when deciding on choices such as, judging one’s character (HSM, 2013). Research
suggests that people who possess a functioning moral compass are more grounded, focused,
content with life, and productive (Roya Rad, 2011). They tend to have more nurturing and
positive relationships with people around them (Roya Rad, 2011). Individuals that have a great
moral compass minimize harm to the world and maximize their contributions for example, they
give back as much as they take in (Roya Rad, 2011). Today, people are extremely vocal about
their views regarding violence and its severity. If I view an issue to be minor and irrelevant,
someone else in the world might take offence to it by seeing that issue as far more complex and
severe. In a world with many different beliefs and values, how do you properly determine when
violence is morally right and wrong? The values each of us hold are, in part, offered up by those
who have raised us, by the culture in which we were entrenched and by our willingness to study
and adapt new ideas that come our way (Young, 2013).
A moral compass helps an individual to determine which is the best direction by using
specific core values imparted as the inner compass (Roya Rad, 2011) I believe that it is crucial to
develop a strong moral compass as it enables a positive direction for the individual, motivating
them towards greatness and success. Growing up, a person is taught strict values that are to be
followed by their family. Their views and acts can have a good or bad influence on their child’s
behavior, including offending behavior. Children are a blank state, meaning that there are several
traits that are inborn or inherited, however, kids learn right and wrong through observation of
others. Whether or not the child is educated on morals and ethnics is mainly the responsibility of
the parent. For the sake of our future, I hope that parents instill a strong sense of right and wrong
