Continuum of gangs: as we move up pyramid we see older gang members, organized crime groups bring in far more profits than street gangs. Involves violent crime (i. e. robberies) and drug/sex trades: violence, often related to impression management. Impression management: process through which people attempt to influence other peoples perceptions of them in order to achieve specific goals/objectives (i. e. corporate branding) In gangs, violence is about maintaining social status and respect, what other gangs think about them. Joining gangs: several routes into gang membership. Jumped in : have to be beat up by other members. Involvement in sex trade: have extensive histories of victimization, tend to have unstable home lives, tend to have mental health/substance abuse issues. In ontario, most gangs are in the gta and on northern reserves.
