Clarence sanders revolutionized grocery stores with the opening of piggly wiggly : innovations such as turnstiles, grocery baskets, and price tags. Michael j cullen, opened first supermarket in 1930: could offer lower prices because he bought the product in bulk. In 1950s supermarkets became a symbol of the economic benefits for american citizens. Wwii was coming of age for supermarkets. Most widely used and copied supermarket innovation is universal barcode. The us retailers (processing industry) were the innovators and leaders on the global market. Food retailers: the real power in the agro-food complex. Buyers = supermarket chainstores: used to think as solely that of developed countries but now has been globalized. Sellers = food processors (big, medium, and small) Determining bargaining power of buyers vs sellers in food system.
