When we label & reject others for their beliefs. -those who question or leave a religion (heretics and apostates), i. e. ayaan hirsi ali received death threats for criticizing and then leaving islam. -academic: funding withdrawn, tenure denied, invitation to speak canceled. -it is so tempting to think people who think differently from us are crazy. -people in different area have different beliefs (horizontal dimension) -there is in practice some overlap between the two categories (as many mentally ill have strange ideas) -but certain beliefs are promoted by the powerful or the educational establishment (vertical dimension) -but the two are analytically different though empirically related. -people with delusions can be very convincing to spread new beliefs. -in practice, people of opposing beliefs may demonize each other and seek to portray each other as deviant and pursue means to do so (political power, media)
