Goal of teaching deviance is to show processes o labeling and social control are in our daily lives. To appreciate it is neither to say we are better nor that there is no right and wrong, but to look at how social control is created, how being labeled feels, how some ppl are discredited and marginalized. We cannot just see deviants as all unfairly labeled or all perverse. In examining different positions, we cannot just condemn or embrace them. Refusing to examine controversial topics merely perpetuates ignorance, and that cannot help anyone. Social deviance: norm breaking with an expected or possible social negative reaction with consequence to ones" identity leading to stigma & punishment. Norms can be societal wide (canada) or situational.
