A set of general propositions meant to explain social phenomena. Meryl streep did this without knowing, advanced propositions she didn"t even know she did. A good theory of deviance allows you to look at your life in brand new ways. If i advance a theory for you, some of us can critically evaluate it and use your own life experiences to test it and see its value. There are theories that fall in both categories, and then there are some who are in the middle who are a little bit of both, a sort of hybrid. Believes deviance lies in characteristics/qualities of act or person. Theories of domestic violence, bullying, racism, mental illness, drug use etc. Soldiers in afghanistan, harmful, but not deviant in this case. A case in another physical harmful thing, but it is not deviant. There are so many things that are deviant, but not harmful.
