Deviance and social space: deviance has a spatial dimension. Particular spaces are associated with particular norms and values. Park (exercise, relax, each lunch, walk the dog etc. ) City, street (walk/run, eat, sop, sell stuff etc. ) Deviance and social space: for many, navigating myriad spaces isn"t a problem. We can easily conform to those norms and values. Many spaces are (cid:498)exclusionary(cid:499: for certain groups, the experience can be extremely different. For certain groups there mere presents in social space questions/challenges dominant norms and values. Those who are a racial minority (race) Those who are lgbtq (gender and sexuality) Those who are homeless (socio-economic status: individuals feel deviant because of who they are and where they are. Racialized spaces: spaces conceptualized as (cid:498)belonging(cid:499) to a particular racial group (cid:523)boddie (cid:884)(cid:882)(cid:883)(cid:882)(cid:524) Racial majority identifies with and lays claims to particular space (e. g. , school. street corner, neighbourhood) Race becomes part of the spatial norm (cid:498))t"s a white school(cid:499), (cid:498)it"s an asian community(cid:499) etc.
