Numbers: for ethnic minorities and women are below. However, female officers are increasing (they have a valuable set of skills) The physical tests that were required were created with male capabilities, so very few women were able to pass. But in 1990, they changed some of the tests for females, so more could be recruited. Proactive: police discover the crime on their own through their job (eg. patrolling). Reactive: police respond from reports from the public. Most of their work is reactive, they wait for people to call. Law enforcement: application of law: investigating crimes, solving crimes, etc. Order maintenance: right vs, wrong: low-key things, but takes up a lot of time. Dealing with mundane things on a daily basis. (eg. public intoxication, noise complaints, etc. ) Service: public service, perform traffic duty, crowd control, presentations in schools. Stage 1 (initial): gather information (eg. did a crime occur or is it an order maintenance?)
