Week 1 september 10, 2015: introduction, defining, and researching crime. Severe deviance is usually when ccc is considered. Consensus (predatory) are the most severe and harmful crimes (murder, rape, etc) timeless behaviours, wrong in themselves. Conflict crimes- somewhat harmful (drug use) wrong from prohibition (mala prohibita) these acts are based around morality. Sociologically, what we consider deviant, isn"t always illegal (getting a tattoo) and vice versa (speeding/j-walking). However, it can be both illegal and deviant. Criminologist: someone who is studying crime, criminals and their behaviour. Criminal justice professionals: work in the system (police, lawyers, judges, parole/probation officers) Cjs: help prevent and respond to crime and those charged. Starts with police who respond immediately or discover crime on their own. Then goes to the court in which you are detained-may or may not be released-plead guilty or not guilty, next is the sentence, and lastly prison (federal (2 years or more) or provincial (2 years minus.
