Sociological criminologists study group characteristics (social class, gender, age, culture, etc. ) Contrast to biological theorists who focus on biology or neurologists that focus on the brain etc. Founding father of sociology (with max weberand karl marx) Using official statistics from european countries, he found that differences in suicide rates were the result of individuals having weak ties to their community (anomie) He found that the suicide rate is different between catholics and protestants. Park and burgess (1967) observed that crime in chicago was geographically patterned. Not all parts of a city have comparable crime rates. They divided chicago into five areas: central business district, downtown area, core city, relatively safe area, zone of transition. Where recent immigrants tend to settle, more industrial and abandoned area: the working class zone. Mainly consists of single families in town homes or something along those lines, mostly working individuals: the residential zone. Single family homes with larger homes, yards, garages, bigger properties.
