Spousal violence is limiting when referring to different types of violence (dating violence is not included) Intimate partner violence- more specific when refers to specific individual types of violence. Kelly and johnson distinguish between 4 types of ipv (intimate partner violence) Not usually chronic and as severe as coercive control. Common use of surveys when studying this type. Violence that is instigated by the break up itself. Well known that ipv is underreported to the police. Many women feel ashamed and feel that it is deserved abuse. Victimization surveys are the preferred measurement approach. 4% of canadians were physically or sexually abused by their partner in the last 5 years. 41% of victims continued to be abused post-break-up. Most severe forms of violence were more likely to be reported by women.
