Document Summary

Correctional institutions" jails, prisons, penitentiaries, mental health institutions. Meant to detain accused and convicted people. Canada"s first prison was kingston penitentiary, which is based off of the auburn model (interact with others during day, return to cell at night; hard labour, severe punishment for rule violation) On the federal level, we have three types of correctional institutions. Minimum security: no perimeter fence, unrestricted inmate movement, except at night. Medium security: high-security perimeter fence, some restrictions on inmate movement. Maximum security: high-security perimeter fence, highly controlled environment with inmate movement strictly controlled. In canada, people who are sentenced to two years less a day serve their time in a provincial or territorial institution; people who are sentenced to two years or more serve in a federal institution. Shu special handling unit (people who are so dangerous that they cannot be house in maximum security) Provincial institutions also range from minimum-maximum security but rankings aren"t uniform across all provinces.
