Social groups: two or more people who indentify and interact with one another. Category: those with a status in common, such as ehtnicity and occupation. Crowd: non-interacting group such as an audience. But, a common experience could turn a non-group into a group (a power black out) Point in feet in your direction = open to conversation. A small social group whose members share personal and lasting relationships. Cooley called this type of group primary because they: 1) are the first groups we experience 2)share attitudes, behaviour and identity 3)provide economic and other assistance 4) are bound by emotion and loyalty. Large and impersonal groups whose members pursue a specific goal or activity. Small circle of friends may no leader at all. However, large secondary groups place leaders in a formal chain of command. Instrumental: focuses on the completion of tasks (leaders make plans, give orders and get things done/secondary ties of respect.
