Social scientists focus more on the present. Comparative research refers to research that employs any type of data analysis method but is concerned with comparing two or more units, such as countries or cultures. Why do current social arrangements take a certain form in some societies but not in others: historical comparative researchers, focus also on culture, they try to see the world through the eyes of those being studied. Include their own perspective in the research process. Grounded theory: opposite of deductive theory: movement from specific to general. Micro and macro most researchers focus on micro what people are doing here from data being observed to general assumptions and now. Locating evidence: through extensive bibliographic work, requires sitting in a library, may even take a few months, or few years. Evaluating quality of evidence: critical enough, and not take anything for granted, evaluate the quality of evidence. Synthesizing: looks for patterns across times (or differences)
