Protestant reformation 1517 martin luther condemning abuses of the church sparked a popular revolt. Focus on the relationship of the individual believer to god. Around 1600 1625, the catholic church had survived the rise of protestantism now in the midst of an expansion. Roman catholic revival historians call the counter reformation which was given added purpose and vigour by a remarkable group of artistic visionaries. Artists and architecture was inspired by the counter reformation. There were scientific discoveries going on, but the counter reformation reflected the spiritualism of the church. New style, baroque, reflected the optimism of the church. Fascination at this time with light/dark movement, time and space: at the time of galileo, newton, artists transferring the idea of seeing and understanding. Explosion of knowledge transferred to artist sought new ways of seeing and understanding. Caravaggio realism and naturalism a new and radial kind of art: painting women as housewives.
