We know that the mass media is not the best source to turn to for an accurate measure of. Youth crime appears to be on the rise but in reality they aren"t committing serious crimes. In 2014 104,000 youth were accused of a criminal code offence: not accounting for unreported crimes. Youth who are charged and not charged is on the decrease. We know that from these other data that offending rises from the ages 12-18 then drops after that. It peaks around 18 for males, and little younger for females (16-17) Criminal activity declines as young people start to take on adult roles and responsibilities (generally over 18) Some research shows that some parts of young people"s brains don"t fully develop until late teens. Hormone changes have been used to explain these stats. Yet, all youth experiences these chances and most don"t get involved in serious crime. The severity of youth crime is on the decline in canada.
