PSYC 4320 Lecture 5: DISCUSSION 5
Document Summary
Discussion 5 - january 28: outline the post menopausal hormone therapy (ht) debate. If there is a definitive answer, what is it? (you can also think back to the taubes article you read last week). In the past, it has been debated whether ht is dangerous/helpful or not. Specifically mention that the separate debates of if it"s dangerous or if it"s helpful. At first, it started out being recognized for its helpful qualities. Grew in popularity in 50s-60s then in 60s-70s. Estrogen therapy is routinely given to the majority of pre-menopausal women who undergo a hysterectomy (removal of the uterus) and bilateral oophorectomy (removal of the ovaries) They then realized that there was a rise in endometrial cancer- cancer of uterine lining. By late 70s this was well-documented, fell out of popularity. By 80s, low dose form was introduced, rose again. Through 1993-1998, women"s health initiative study looked into 27,000 women enrolled into hormone trials.
