PSYC 2650 Lecture Notes - Lecture 10: Image Scanner, Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation, Mental Rotation
Document Summary
Francis galton asked various people to describe images in their head and rate them for vividness- he asked them to introspect or look within . Some participants could describe their images in rich detail and clarity, while others could not. The pattern of what information is included, as well as what information is prominent, depends on the mode of presentation: for a depiction, distinctiveness and association won"t matter. Instead, size and position will determine what"s prominent and what"s not. For example when describing a cat, you indicate a cat has whiskers and claws, but don"t mention a head because it seems obvious. When you draw a cat however, the head is the most prominent feature. Image scanning procedure: an experimental procedure in which participants are asked to form a specific mental image and then are asked to scan, with their mind"s eye , from one point to another. By timing these scans, the experimenter can determine how long.
