PSYC 2360 Lecture Notes - Lecture 15: Confounding
Document Summary
Threats to validity can be: construct, statistical conclusion. Internal validity: extent to which changes in the dv can confidently be attributed to the effect of the iv rather than to the potential effects of confounding variables. Experimental control: occurs to the extent the experimenter is able to eliminate effects on the dependent variable other than the effects of the dependent variable. Confounding variables: control of extraneous variables. Select from a limited, and therefore homogeneous, population. Use before-after research designs: dependent variable is assessed before and after the manipulation. Standardization of conditions: all participants in all levels of the independent variable are treated in exactly the same way, with the single exception of the manipulation itself, experimenters must treat everyone the same, often use a script. Impact: when the manipulation used in an experiment created the hoped-for changes in the conceptual variable: experimental realism: extent to which the experimental manipulation involves the participants in the research.
