Man (human) is by nature a social animal (aristotle, politics, c. 328 b. c. ) We try to understand why humans behave the way they do. We try to understand how we influence each other. Social relatedness (connection in a social setting) Try to understand the relationship btw different sets of people eg. you and your family compared to you and your doctor. The scientific study of the way in which a person"s thoughts, feelings, and behaviour are influenced by the real or imagined presence of other people. (allport, 1985) A field must adopt a set of values and methods to be considered a scientific field. Skepticism (be skeptic of new research that hasn"t been verified or supported) Scientific method is systematic observation, description and measurement. Social psych differs from philosophy because social psych: measures a wide variety of attitudes, uses the scientific method c, focuses on how social situations affect people is empirical.
