Document Summary

The self-concept: an individual"s overall beliefs about his or her own attributes. According to hazel rose markus (american psychologist, 1977) it is a set of distinct beliefs that we hold about ourselves and that influence what we notice about the world, as well as how we process self-relevant information. Eg someone who see themselves as artistic may focus on aesthetic details of what they see, like their friends outfits, or the colour arrangement of a sunset, where those who don"t see themselves as artistic may overlook these things. It changes from childhood to adulthood as our perceptions of ourselves become more complex, particularly in adolescence. Children often have a concrete self-concept, focused on physical or visable characteristics, e. g. gender, hair colour, age, who their friends are. Adults usually have a psychologically based self-concept, e. g. political views, values, plans for the future, and disposition. Self-esteem: an individual"s evaluation of his or her own worth.
