Motivation is a set of energetic force that initiates work related behaviour, and determine its form, direction, intensity and duration (these are the basics, motivations influences performance) Humans have five needs arranged in hierarchy of strength and influence. Top of pyramid to bottom (self actualization, esteem, belongingness, safety, physiological) Move to the next level of needs after preceding needs is satisfied. Different levels of needs can be active at the same time. People can move back to a lower level need even after a high level need has been met. People will be motivated at work to the extent that their job matches their needs. People with socialized power want power to achieve their objectives. Personalized need for power: to better themselves, poor leader, negative workplace behaviours. Need for achievement: want to work alone, like to be accountable for the success and being in charge of outcomes.
