Le bon described three characteristics of crowds: Suggestibility (respond to the cues that are available in the environment which usually are destructive and aggressive. Contagion (starts spreading fast and everyone does the same thing) Le bon described crowd as source of power as well. Allport (1924) was highly critical of le bon and argued: The individual in the crowd behaves just as he would behave alone only more so (pg. (you join if you are destructive and mad, as in le bons view when you join you become aggressive and mad. ) Allport suggested that in crowd people reveal their true nature. Deindividuation - refers to loss of sense of individual responsibility and reduction of inhibition due to joining a group. Two conditions that lead to de-individuation are: As the size of the group increases, deindividuation increases, leading to a higher probability of violence in the group.
