One of the first mental theory as opposed to behavioral theory. Kids do not know less but rather think differently. Intelligence: anything that will let you get ahead. Saw children as constructionists: figuring out the world by completing tasks and making sense of there current understandings. Scheme structure: behavioral and sensorimotor schemes, symbolic schemes, operational schemes. Modify scheme to interpret new things: not all 4 legged animals are cats. He says everyone will go through these stages. Sensory inputs and motor capabilities become coordinated six sub stages. Reflex activit s (0-1 month: always just sucking on shit. Primary circular reactions 1-4 months: understand they have reflexes the can control, realize some may be usefully repeated (i. e thumbsucking) Do things not centered around there own body: when a squeaky duck squeaks by accident it was not goal directed but was fluke rather, but may keep doing it after initial reaction.
