Eugenics movement: if we only let intelligent people reproduce then we will have a very intelligent species. Wanted to measure innate mental abilities: one of the first to promote the idea of quantifying mental abilities, measured nervous system efficiency (e. g. reaction speed, hand strength, skull size) If someone has fast reflexes then he"d assume they have quick cognitive abilities: attempted to measure abstract concepts (like beauty, most of these things do not strongly correlate. Hired by french gov"t to identify school children needing special education. Observed that dull children perform like younger children and bright children like older: concept of mental age, william stern and intelligence quotation. Used tests to measure mental judgement: direction (steps you take to accomplish), adaptation (change your work to fit the task), and critiscism (critique your own work)
