Document Summary

Cohort = a group of subjects (people, raccoons, elephants, etc. ) that has a defined characteristic in common. In epidemiological studies, the characteristic of interest is the exposure status. Selection of study subjects in cohort studies is based on exposure status. Different groups defined based on exposure levels (eg. e+ vs e- groups: note: all subjects must be d- (free of disease/outcome) at the beginning of the study. Follow groups over a pre-determined time period to estimate incidence of disease in each exposure cohort: so, we compare the development of disease in our e+ and e- groups. Observational because investigator does not determine or allocate the exposure status. Two approaches: select based on exposure status, select defined population prior to identifying exposure history. Prospective cohort study (more common: follow e+ and e- forward in time from present (t=0) to a pre-determined end point in the future.
