The rise of zionism can be attribute to four main factors: the haskalah or jewish enlightenment, the secularist awakening. Judaism is named the third official religion in france, but they"re expected to assimilate: all jews were expected to take a french name rather than a hebrew based or biblical name. They had to use to courts of the french system and were expected to clearly renounce any other sense of nationhood. They were expected to seem like french people on the streets, but could be jewish at home. This led to reformed judaism, they still went to the temple, but spirituality was the main focus: the influence of european nationalist movements, moses hess writes rome and jerusalem.
