State no longer only source of authority but governs in conjunction with other authority. A complex network of relationships of governing. Produces knowledge, identities (the rational individual) what is normal, what is not, what is important, what is not, who should be listened to, what should be respected. These relationships of power may change but we can never be free of the exercise of power. In bringing about change we produce new identities, new knowledge within relations of power. Is the term used to describe the western historical legacy of excercising gendered power within a social and political system. Gender identities, masculinity and feminity and the hierarchy of power evident in those identities are produced within social and political relations of power.
