The colonization of north america by the english and the french took off. Emerged after the loss of the 13 colonies in north america and after the independence in south america. It was the british empire that become the dominant power all over the world, mostly because the french had lost a lot of influence. Spain and portugal had lost their hold over north america. Search for new markets, new investment opportunities. Colonialism: the territorial conquest, occupation and direct control of one country by another. Imperialism: political and economic system in which one state controls the political and economic life of other societies- either directly or indirectly. Neo-colonialism: the perpetuation of exploitative economic relationships between a developed and a developing country, despite the formal political independence of the latter.
