Virtu does not equal virtue ce p ts : Virtue can be translated as boldness, skillfulness, audacity, ruthlessness, manliness. He is going to exert cruelty on the people at any cost and gains pleasure. You need to learn how not to be good if you are the ruler. Not act morally for the benefit of the state. He is suggesting that the prince does not do this under all circumstances but if there is a threat to the state, or if it is necessary to succeed. It is fine to act beyond borders of morality. Tried to institute a christian republic, people did not really like that. He was burned at the stake, ended christian theocracy. Under this republic, machiavelli high political position in florence (florentine ambassador) held this high-ranking position for 14 years. Republic lasted for 14 years and then in 1512, medicis come back into power.
