There are two principal legal traditions in the world today (as well as some more minor additional ones) civil code and common law. Most countries in the world, specifically european countries and former european colonies, use some kind of civil code (or civil law, legal codes, etc. ); the most influential civil code emerged from roman civil law. Many countries in the world are also influenced by sharia law (mostly arab countries) these countries tend to combine sharia law and roman civil law. The starting point of a civil code is some kind of a series of laws that are written down on paper.
