Germany, around 1784, everybody called it the age of enlightenment, but nobody asked. French revolution (1789) breaking from ancient regime marked by: decline in material life. France burdened by enormous amount of debt. Political conflict formation of estates general, outcome of conflict between different classes of french society estates were classes (first: monarch, Emerging idea that law should allow us the freedom to do whatever we want so long as we abide by the rule that everyone is equal. Free society allows the distribution and dissemination of information and opinion ignites debate, encourages people to come forward with their opinions. Enlightenment is a process it is a process of people striving toward knowledge and learning. Constant antagonism between private and public sides in 19th century, there"s an attempt to reconcile these two parts of human life.
