Document Summary
Means to an end- instrumental value be friends with someone because you want something that they can get you. Ends to themselves- intrinsic value you want to be friends with someone because you think they are a kind person. The only legitimate scheme is free of our own good, if they are legitimately our goods to begin with. 2nd argument: self-ownership argument: treating people as equals means treating them as ends in themselves. If people are ends in themselves, then they may not be used without their consent. If they may not be used without their consent, then they own themselves. If people own themselves, then they own their talents and abilities. Rawls- you do not own the products of your talents and abilities. Rawl"s: of course you own your talents, but just not the fruits of them.
