Document Summary

Certainly they are all diseases, but more specifically, they all result from the death of cells. I will return to each of these examples in more detail later, in both this unit and the next, changes in. All cells have certain basic requirements for normal cellular function. If these requirements are not met, that is, if the cell is injured, then progressive changes will occur. First, the cells" function will be altered; later, degeneration will occur. Underlying all diseases are cells which are not functioning normally, or which have undergone degeneration or death. In this respect, having a good grasp of the causes and mechanisms of cell dysfunction, degeneration and death is basic to an understanding of disease. Cell dysfunction, degeneration and cell death really represent a continuum. Mild cell injury will lead to functional changes which are more classically considered in the discipline of pathophysiology, and are outside the scope of this course.
