Specific snps are minimally associated with maximum weight loss and/or weight regain following bariatric surgery. In other words, patients with any combination of these snps would lose less weight and/or regain more weight than patients without. Fto snp is most strongly associated with weight loss and gain. Compared rygb patients to determine variants in the mc4r gene. After the 1 year pre-surgery caloric restriction, i251l allele carriers lost 9% more weight and had improved insulin sensitivity compared to non-carriers. No difference in %weight loss between patients during the first 6 months post-surgery, regardless of mc4r genotype. At 12 months post surgery, i251l carriers were able to lose more body weight than non-carriers. Tcf7l2 snp reduces beta-cell sensitivity to incretions, but does not reduce incretin levels themselves. Carriers had higher fasting blood glucose levels compared to non-carriers at all points post-surgery. This means that carriers are more metabolically unhealthy (glucose shouldn"t just be hanging out in the blood)
