Eocyte hypothesis : anaerobic archaeon evolves into protoeukaryote then phagocytoses aerobic, heterotrophic a-proteobacterium. The aerobes have to have detoxifying enzymes in order to survive in the presence of oxygen: this cell would split and engulf a photosynthetic prokaryote.
