Timeline: egypt under nasser, sadat, and mubarak (crackdown in the 80s, soviet invasion of afghanistan in 1979 and us/gulf arabs/pakistan/iran support of mujahedeen to soviet withdrawal. The mujahedeen believed they actually caused the soviet withdrawal and legitimized themselves through that. In reality there was more to the soviet withdrawal than that: iran under the shah, now islamic republic in iran as of 1979, war with iraq. Egypt-israeli peace: president sadat of egypt travels to israel for peace talks (camp david) in 1977 and by march 1979 a formal peace treaty between israel and egypt is signed. Arab world unhappy when they hear sadat is going to talks. Egypt becomes a pariah in the arab world and is ousted from the arab. He is replaced by mubarak: as of 2013, egypt"s military owns 40% of the country"s entire economy. Conscripts make up a large majority of the workforce: mubarak was advised by army officials and those in the intelligence communities.
