Confinement was fairly small scale, most was not in public institutions, but in private ones: dealt with by families. Rift between sane and insane during the 18th century. Seen to be mad because they have lived in sin and are of poor morals. Rake man who exhibits immoral conduct. Began as a religious institution: a priory of st mary of bethlehem, in bishopsgate.
