The people"s war" - women"s interests included in discussions of what new version of freedom meant: food riots. In times of war there is inflation; living, everyday goods like food (largely due to governmental financing of war) also market instability (difficulties transporting food). Coffee, tea, flour, sugar & meat causing most trouble in this war. Food riots = citizens complaining to government about their inability to feed their families: women led the food riots. Large public demonstrations in cities; sometimes there was violence, damage, stolen food. Women"s entrance into the public sphere through riots. Also illustrates that women are becoming political; protesting unfair policies: the woman warrior. Women assuming masculine personas, attempting to engage in warfare as men.
