Document Summary

Quebec became worried that a new constitution of canada may not uphold their right to be able to send their children to french-speaking schools. Gang of eight (8 provinces) line up against the federal government in constitutional negotiations. They wanted repatriation of the constitution without a charter of rights and freedoms and wanted an amending formula that included 7 provinces that held 50% of the population. It becomes clear that agreement won"t be reached as parties war against each other in provincial vs. federal rights. This leads pierre trudeau to margaret thatcher to ask if he could repatriate the constitution without the accord of the provinces. She said yes, and said that achieving provincial accord was a domestic issue that the british government didn"t need to worry about. Many provinces took the canadian government to court in an attempt to block them from repatriating the constitution.
