Amaterasu: the sun goddess: japanese people descended from the sun goddess, linked with the imperial family and their role as the divine monarch. Commodore perry"s black ships 1853: until the 1850, japan was in contact with its asian neighbours and tried blocking people from the west. Meiji emperor (r. 1867-1912: meiji means enlightened rule , wanted to make rule about education and progress. Empress sh ken (1849-1914: picture with meiji, only wore western clothing in public, the quarters he lived in were entirely japanese (eg. no tables) Geisha: at first they were men, by the late 1700s, women took over and played roles as entertainers, conversationalist, sexual partners, etc. Shinto: japanese indigenous group, focused on purity and cleanliness. Confucianism: tying with bushido, about loyalty and family, focusing on family and how it relates to state. The 3 blneded together make this the idea of japanesness (bushido, shinto, confucianism: eg. The minute you get it dirty you throw it away.
