The rise of the united states: becoming a super power, had a powerful navy, two coasts. Political implications: the fall of the monarchy. The russian and mexican revolution: social revolutions. Social, intellectual, artistic forces: women"s rights movement, labour movements, the 20"s. Shifts in the balance of power: imperial ambitions, people like to blame the expansion of empires for wwi, the rise of germany disrupted the balance of power. The german problem : germany was looking to expand, even in europe: bismarck, alsace-lorraine, industrialized very rapidly, developed a philosophical view focused on militaristic strength and power. Arms race: growth in standing armies, germany wanted a better naval presence.
