Document Summary

Dry land areas cover ~40% of the earth"s land surface: much of this is in asia, the middle east, africa and australia some of the poorest countries in our world are places containing dry lands. 3 types of dry lands moisture is central to defining these areas. Patterns of precipitation tend to be highly irregular in dry lands, and it is possible that these patterns will be affected by global climate change, potentially worsening the situation in some places. Desertification has been defined in many ways since it was first coined more than 50 years ago. The un has become involved in mobilizing international efforts to combat desertification. In defining the desertification, the un convention to combat desertification (unccd) focuses on the relationship between human activities and natural climatic variations in dry-land areas and makes use of the term land degradation. Important to understanding desertification is to recognise that both physical (natural) and human factors combine.
