The fourth of erikson"s social crises, during which children atempt to master many skills, developing a sense of themselves as either industrious or inferior, competent or incompetent. Industry is inishing something new and exciing, collecing things. Being producive is intrinsically joyous and it fosters the self control that is a crucial defense against emoional problems. Parents who encourage children"s atempts and iniiaives help them master skills and develop a sense of conidence in themselves. Those who feel inferior or not proud of their accomplishments will tend to engage in risky business down the road. Latency: freud"s term for middle childhood, during which children"s emoional drives and psychosexual needs are quiet (latent). Freud thought that sexual conlicts form earlier stages are only temporarily submerged, bursing forth again at puberty. With cogniion, beter awareness of self in comparison to others (i"m awesome now)
